Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)

The Brazilian Journal of Health Aromatherapy and Essential Oil (BJHAEO) recognizes that Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools—such as large language models, text generators, and image-generation systems—may be used as supportive resources during research and manuscript preparation. However, their use must be transparent, ethical, and fully compliant with international standards of scholarly publishing.

Permitted Use of GenAI

Authors may use GenAI tools solely for supportive purposes, such as:

  • Language editing and grammar correction;
  • Improving clarity, readability, or stylistic consistency of the manuscript;
  • Assisting with translation or linguistic refinement of text originally written by the authors.

GenAI tools must not be listed as authors, as they cannot assume responsibility for the originality, integrity, or accuracy of scientific work.

Prohibited Use of GenAI

The use of GenAI tools is strictly prohibited for the following purposes:

  • Generating original research data, results, or analyses;
  • Fabricating, falsifying, manipulating, or altering data, images, figures, or references;
  • Producing scientific interpretations, conclusions, or hypotheses without direct intellectual contribution from the authors;
  • Replacing critical scientific reasoning, methodological decisions, or authorship responsibility.

Disclosure Requirement

Authors are required to explicitly disclose any use of GenAI tools within the manuscript, typically in the Methods, Acknowledgments, or a dedicated Disclosure Statement, specifying:

  • The name of the GenAI tool used;
  • The purpose of its use (e.g., language editing or readability improvement);
  • A clear statement confirming that the authors retain full responsibility for the content.

Failure to disclose the use of GenAI tools, or misuse inconsistent with this policy, may result in manuscript rejection, editorial action, or post-publication correction or retraction, in accordance with BJHAEO’s ethical policies.

Author Responsibility and Ethical Accountability

All authors remain fully responsible for:

  • The originality and authenticity of the manuscript;
  • The accuracy of data, analyses, and interpretations;
  • Compliance with ethical, legal, and copyright standards;
  • Proper attribution of sources and avoidance of plagiarism.

Editorial Oversight

BJHAEO reserves the right to request clarification regarding the use of GenAI tools at any stage of the editorial process. The journal may apply additional scrutiny when GenAI use is disclosed or suspected.

Alignment with International Standards

BJHAEO follows international recommendations and best practices regarding the responsible use of artificial intelligence in scholarly publishing, including guidance from organizations such as COPE, ICMJE, and major scientific publishers.
